Should I Get My Music Mastered After It Has Been Mixed?
Mastering is the final stage of production in a musical project. As an independent musician you maybe considering getting your music mastered. Some people view mastering as an additional expense and yes it does not come free as with any service delivered by a professional. The majority of record labels get their music/artists tracks mastered because
there is an issue of quality control and they may be less technically inclined and want the music to receive a once over from a technical expert before committing it to their catalogue. The same can also be said of an established independent artist.
With the advent of PC/Apple digital audio workstations music has been easier/cost effective to self produce and it is immensely enjoyable and fulfilling to produce your own music and recordings. Of course many artists will be uploading their tracks to websites such as Reverbnation, Myspace and Youtube for some exposure and self promotion. Many artists will also have taken the next step and created their own website to distribute and promote their music.Ultimately an artist should consider mastering and what it can add to the music before release. The benefits are that the music will be free of clicks, glitches and other sonic defects as the mastering engineer will address these issues or advise small mix tweaks to iron out such sonic problems.
If you are beginning music production at home you may not have the budget or inclination to master your tracks but I still think it is worth considering in the longer term and of course as you develop as an artist. A mastering engineer will often give valuable mix feedback and also help identify potential weaknesses in your monitoring system by giving useful feedback about mix tone (i.e. if it’s too thin sounding, or too bassy, or too bright etc.) This will give an insight into how you can compensate for such mix issues and produce better mixes each time you produce a track. Of course budgets can be tight and it may be that the music is not destined to be distributed more widely that a circle of friends. An artist must weigh up the pros and cons and decide whether the benefits of mastering will apply to them. Mastering prices have certainly become much more affordable these days although I suggest being cautious when choosing a mastering studio to ensure the engineer has the credentials and your best interests at heart. There are many faceless websites offering such services so do choose with care. Many mastering studios will offer a free preview and this is a great way to get your mix checked and evaluated and hear the abilities of any given studio. The power is in the musicans hands to be selective and choose the right studio and engineer for their needs.

Strangers Online $15.35 Hollis Parker hosts a nightly web show that brings together sexual misfits from across the World Wide Web. Haunted by the murder of his wife four years earlier, he throws himself into his work, fielding questions from adoring fans, exhibitionists and quirky fetishists – all via their web cams. Then, a new intern at the studio shows romantic interest in Hollis, and what begins as a seemingly innocent crush turns into an unhealthy obsession. Though his show usually keeps him at a comfortable distance from his audience, Hollis soon learns that his final show may end in bloody murder – broadcasted live to all his adoring fans. From the producers of Hard comes this erotic thriller told in the vein of Blue Velvet and Body of Evidence. Strangers Online resurrects a dying genre and shines a light on the darkened corners of the digital world, where sex, secrets and danger lurk in the shadows. |
